President's Report

Dear CPCU Atlanta Members & Friends,

July is the heart of summer — midway between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and a popular time for travel, lazy days at the pool, and long weekends spent unwinding. But this July carries extra significance, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I've been genuinely moved by the Independence Day celebrations taking place this weekend and in the weeks and months leading up to this milestone. Flags and banners have been waving throughout my neighborhood, and my family was able to enjoy the fireworks in Sugar Hill on July 3rd.

Amid these celebrations, I've found myself returning to a familiar line from the Declaration itself: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Our country was born with the ideal of equality — the value of all lives. That ideal aligns closely with our chapter's own goal of inclusivity and belonging. We want everyone to feel welcome and to know that the CPCU Society has something to offer them, whether they are just beginning their pursuit of the CPCU designation or earned it decades ago. Our chapter includes insurance and risk management professionals across a wide variety of roles and lines of business — underwriters, claims adjusters, actuaries, brokers and agents, and even data scientists like me. Whatever your role, there's a place for you here. That diversity is what makes us great.

I also want to share a recent change on our Chapter Board. Jenny Saint Preux has resigned as President Elect, and Penny Gildersleeve will step into that role through the end of the year.

We are deeply grateful for all that Jenny has done for our chapter over the past two years, including coordinating our 2025 & 2026 Annual Golf Tournaments and playing a key role in our outreach efforts. Her leadership will be missed, and we wish her all the best in her next opportunity.

Penny earned her CPCU designation in 2011 and has been an active member of the Atlanta chapter ever since. She is currently serving as a Director on our chapter board, focusing on Professional Development. Penny has a genuine passion for talent development, mentoring individuals, and building high-performing teams — a passion that also shows up in her day job. She serves as an Auto Claim Section Manager at State Farm and has an extensive background spanning diverse leadership functions. Be sure to check out her Pro Tips at the end of this newsletter and greet her at our next event!

Speaking of events, you won’t want to miss our Lunch & Learn on July 30 or Atlanta Risk Focus 2026 on September 19!  Details for both of these events can be found later in this newsletter.

As we celebrate this milestone anniversary and all it represents, I'm reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of a community like this one — professionally and personally. Thank you for being part of the Atlanta CPCU chapter, and I hope to see many of you at an upcoming event.

Atlanta Risk Focus 2026

We will be returning to Roam Perimeter for Atlanta Risk Focus 2026.  We have a great lineup of speakers this year including Tim Fletcher, Gary Clevenger, Marty Murphy, Will Tschetter, Neelaakshi Piplani, Malcolm Tsung, and Sarah Dillingham Clapa.  The final schedule will be announced by the end of the month.

We have a special opportunity planned for our lunch hour.  Penny Gildersleeve will be leading a panel discussion entitled, "Jump Start Your Career."  Following the discussion, you will have the opportunity for a resume review and head shots.

You won't want to miss our July Lunch & Learn: Worker's Compensation 101.  Our presenter, Nija Brown, AINS, CAWC,
is a seasoned Commercial Underwriter with over seven years of experience in the insurance industry, specializing in Workers' Compensation portfolio management, risk selection, and pricing strategy. Based in Atlanta, GA, her passion for insurance began early — she was first introduced to the industry in high school, where she took foundational courses dual enrolled at Olivet College, that set the stage for a thriving career.

Member Spotlight

Meet board member Keline Bornelus.

How did you get started in the insurance industry?

My journey into the insurance industry began with a desire to help others.  Immediately after I graduated Florida A & M University, I joined Chubb Claims Department in Chesapeake, Virginia. I enjoyed being the calm in the storm for many individuals, families, and business owners by helping them with their claim process. Over the years, I have built my career by focusing on risk management, client advocacy, and providing solutions that help people navigate life's uncertainties. The insurance industry has given me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while developing strong relationships within the communities I serve.

What is your current role?

I am the owner and principal agent of the Bornelus Agency, where I work with individuals, families, and businesses to identify insurance solutions that meet their unique needs. My role involves helping clients understand their coverage options, managing risk, and ensuring they have the protection necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals. I am actively involved in leadership and professional development initiatives within the insurance industry.  Additionally, I am the area director of a marketing platform for top realtors.

Why did you decide to pursue your CPCU designation?

I am pursuing the CPCU designation because I want to deepen my industry knowledge and strengthen my ability to serve clients at the highest level. The CPCU curriculum provides a comprehensive understanding of insurance, risk management, ethics, and business principles. Pursuing my designation challenges me professionally and has connected me with a network of dedicated insurance professionals who are committed to excellence and continuous learning.

How have you been involved with the CPCU Society and the Atlanta Chapter?

I have been actively involved with the Atlanta CPCU Chapter for the past four years. During that time, I have participated in chapter events, educational programs, networking opportunities, and volunteer initiatives that support the insurance community. The activity I'm most proud of is my involvement of the 2024 I-Day, where I was committee chair.  The board members and I were able to get the local universities back involved with the chapter, add some additional professional services and offer multiple CE courses to our members.

Recently, I was honored to join the Atlanta CPCU Chapter Board of Directors. As a board member, I have served on the Scholarship Committee, helping support the next a generation of insurance professionals.  Also,  I currently serve as Programming Chair, where I work with fellow board members to develop educational and networking opportunities that provide value to our members. My involvement with CPCU has been rewarding and has allowed me to build meaningful relationships throughout the industry.

What do you like to do for fun?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, attending community events, and supporting local organizations. I also enjoy networking with other professionals, mentoring emerging leaders, and staying involved in initiatives that help strengthen both the insurance and business communities. Whether through professional organizations, volunteer work, or community engagement, I enjoy connecting with people and finding opportunities to make a positive impact.  Lastly, as a foodie I take pleasure in exploring different local restaurant and trying new cuisine.

Diversity & Inclusion Spotlight

July 2026 — Diversity & Inclusion Spotlight

July challenges us to do more than “recognize” diversity—we’re invited to build it into everyday life. Inclusion is the difference between being present and being valued, between having access and having opportunity. As we move through July’s Diversity & Inclusion moments, let’s reflect on what it takes to create workplaces and communities where every person can participate fully, contribute meaningfully, and feel safe to be themselves.

  • Disability Pride Month is a worldwide time to celebrate the diversity of the disability community and recognize the accomplishments of people with disabilities. It’s a powerful reminder that inclusion goes beyond accommodation—it’s respect, visibility, and belonging.
  • Independence Day (U.S.) — July 4 invites reflection on the meaning of freedom and equality for all. It’s a meaningful opportunity to recommit to the values that strengthen communities - especially fairness, participation, and equal rights in practice.
  • Nelson Mandela Day — July 18 honors Mandela’s legacy and reinforces a commitment to service, equality, and human dignity. It reminds us that lasting progress is measured by how we uplift others and expand opportunity for all.
  • Disability Independence Day — July 26 (commemorating the ADA) recognizes the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act and underscores the ongoing work needed to ensure equal access and rights. It’s a call to remove barriers—physical, systemic, and attitudinal—so independence and opportunity are truly within reach for everyone.
  • International Day of Friendship — July 30 recognizes the power of connection across cultures and borders. Friendships grounded in understanding and empathy help reduce isolation and build trust—values that directly support inclusive workplaces.

 

As we celebrate July’s Diversity & Inclusion opportunities, let’s recommit to inclusion by listening, learning, and taking action that expands belonging. When we make room for everyone, we don’t just strengthen our workplaces - we strengthen our communities, too.

Pro Tip: Use the “Two-Minute Rule”

  • If a task takes 2 minutes or less, do it right away.
  • Why it helps:
    • Reduces mental clutter: small tasks don’t pile up.
    • Builds momentum: quick wins make larger tasks easier to start.
    • Prevents last-minute stress: less rushing means fewer errors.
  • Examples: reply to an email, rename a file, jot a quick note, prep for a short meeting.

Bottom line: Clear the small stuff immediately so your focus stays on what matters most
